Florida leads the nation in car accident drownings

Serving nearby areas by Palm Beach and West Palm Beach, Florida

In the five-year period between 2008 and 2012, 49 people drowned inside their own vehicles in Florida. The next closest state is Texas, with 18 drownings in car accidents. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated the number of drownings in Florida car accidents averages about 57 each year. Sadly, Palm Beach County sees more automobile drownings than any other county.

One likely cause for the higher number of these fatalities in Florida is the greater amount of miles of waterfront roads we have compared to other states. The state can do more protect our citizens by placing guardrails in appropriate locations along our roadways.

Rescuers warn that should you find yourself inside your vehicle crashed into a body of water, it is important to remain calm and get out as quickly as possible. Most survivors only have seconds to unfasten seat belts and climb out the window before the passenger compartment fills with water. Water pressure on the doors makes it almost impossible to open them from the inside as the vehicle submerges.
